Psoriasis - Overview

Psoriasis is a long-term skin disorder that results in red, thickened patches on the skin, with the shedding of silvery scales. The condition may be accompanied by discomfort, itching and/or pain.

The skin is made up of layers and skin cells that undergo a cycle of 28 days. This means the cells which are formed in the lower layer gradually move upwards and appear on the surface after 28 days to be shed. However, in psoriasis, the cells start growing very rapidly, without waiting for the earlier ones to shed, which leads to a build-up of a thick layer of cells, leading to the thickening of the skin, and red patches with scaling in the affected area.

Types of Psoriasis

Psoriasis lesions differ in appearance, depending on the type of disorder. There are five major types of psoriasis: plaque (broad, raised area on skin), guttate (spotted as if by drops), pustular (small, elevated, circumscribed lesions), inverse (psoriasis in armpits and groin), and erythrodermic (recurring reddish, psoriatic patches covered with silvery scales). There is also another form called psoriatic arthritis (psoriasis with joint pain). Read More

Causes of Psoriasis

Researchers are still investigating how and why psoriasis develops. Some say it is likely that our immune system and heredity play an important role in its development. But the causes are not universal to all. A factor causing psoriasis in one individual may not cause the disorder in another. Some common causes are stress, distressing life events, skin injury, and severe sore throat. Read More

Symptoms of Psoriasis

Psoriasis is multi-faceted. Its common symptoms are itching, psoriatic plaques (scaly patches), rashes (redness, swelling) and skin pain. These may be present on elbows, knees, scalp, lower back, and lower extremities, with thick silvery-white scales of dead skin that may itch substantially. In many cases, psoriasis may wane and reappear, for no obvious reason. Read More
