PCOS Overview

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common health problem in women of reproductive age (usually 12-49), though it can also occur in girls as young as 10 years old. It is caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. The hormonal imbalance creates problem in the ovaries.

In women with PCOS –

  • Multiple cysts develop in the ovaries (condition is called polycystic ovaries)
  • Ovaries do not regularly release eggs
  • There are high levels of 'male hormones' called androgens in the body.

This imbalance in hormones causes women to skip menstrual periods and makes it harder for them to get pregnant. PCOS also causes excess hair growth on the face and body. If left untreated, it can lead to other chronic ailments like type 2 diabetes and heart diseases. Obesity, lack of physical activity and a family history of the condition might increase your risk of having PCOS.
